Red Oak - Quercus spp.
The top half of the wood sample is unfinished and the lower half is finished with clear semi-gloss polyurethane.
Nearly impossible to distinguish between the wood of the red oaks which include Shumard (Q. shumarii), southern red (Q. falcata), cherrybark (Q. falcata var. pagodaefolia), black (Q. velutina), willow (Q. phellos) and water (Q. nigra). Red oak, shown, has a whitish to grayish, reddish-brown sapwood with pinkish to light reddish-brown heartwood. Moderately heavy and hard. |
