Discover Our Brazilian Redwood Hardwood Flooring

Brazilian Redwood hardwood flooring, also known as Massaranduba is renowned for its rich color, exceptional density, and unmistakable beauty. At Pennington Hardwoods, we offer 3/4″ thicksolid Brazilian Redwood flooring and occasionally 1/2″ thick engineered Brazilian Redwood floors with a 3mm wear layer. With its deep reddish brown hues and bold grain movement, Brazilian Redwood makes a dramatic and enduring statement in any space.

We offer premium selections of pre-milled tropical hardwood flooring from our high-standard mill partners in Brazil which predominantly produce for the more stringent European market. This is a notably higher quality product than what is typically sold here in the US. We strive to maintain inventory of solid Brazilian Redwood hardwood flooring unfinished and prefinished in a satin sheen polyurethane. The widths commonly stocked include 2-1/4″, 3″, 3-1/4″, 4″, and 5″.

If you prefer wider widths or longer lengths, we can custom mill your Brazilian Redwood flooring here, to the same exacting standards as our precision-milled domestic hardwood flooring. Our various textures, stains, and finishes are available in both our standard and custom milled Brazilian Redwood flooring. All of our Tropical or exotic hardwood species serve beautifully as flooring with most being 2-3 times harder and more dense than our domestic species.

Characteristics of Our Brazilian Redwood Hardwood Flooring

Appearance: Brazilian Redwood features a rich, deep reddish-brown tone with golden undertones and bold, interlocking grain. The color intensifies over time, developing into a darker, more uniform hue with exposure to light. Its high contrast and dramatic character make it a stunning focal point in any room.

Hardness: With a Janka hardness rating of approximately 3,750 lbs, Brazilian Redwood is one of the hardest woods in the world. It offers exceptional resistance to dents, impacts, and wear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas, commercial settings, and active households where durability is a priority.

Stability: While dense and strong, Brazilian Redwood has moderate dimensional movement and benefits from proper acclimation and installation, particularly in climates with seasonal humidity swings. Engineered options offer enhanced stability for wider planks and radiant heat applications.

Versatility: Though traditionally associated with formal or exotic interiors, Brazilian Redwood can be finished in a variety of ways to complement both classic and contemporary styles. Its rich tone pairs beautifully with natural stone, leather, and fine cabinetry—making it a bold yet sophisticated flooring choice.

Our Featured Options in Brazilian Redwood Hardwood Flooring

Brazilian Redwood is naturally stunning—and we offer a variety of ways to enhance and tailor it to suit your design preferences and performance needs. From structure to stain, every detail is crafted with care.

Structure

Choose from two robust construction formats:

  • 3/4″ Thick Solid Hardwood Flooring
  • 1/2″ Thick Engineered Hardwood Flooring with a 3mm wear layer

Solid Brazilian Redwood is ideal for nail-down installations and long-term refinishing. Engineered options provide added stability for glue-down, radiant heat, or concrete subfloor applications—especially beneficial given the density of this species.

Grades

In Tropical hardwoods we offer Clear grade and occasionally Select grade:

  • Clear Plus — flooring milled to order from FAS lumber, the best of the best
  • Clear – clean, without defects, and the most consistent color
  • Select – clean, with little to no defects, and moderate to heavy color variation

Widths

Brazilian Redwood flooring in widths of 2-1/4″, 3″, 3-1/4″, 4″, 5″ are often readily available in inventory, and widths ranging from 6″ to 12″ are available when milled to order from FAS lumber yielding a grade of Clear Plus. Wide plank hardwood floors enhance the natural drama of the grain and add luxurious presence in large, open rooms.

Textures

While often installed smooth to highlight its natural luster, Brazilian Redwood can be customized with subtle textures to suit your aesthetic:

  • Wire Brushed (light)
  • Soft Hand Scraped
  • Subtle Distressing
  • Worn Edges for aged elegance

These enhancements add depth while allowing the species’ natural beauty to shine through.

Stain

Brazilian Redwood is typically finished without a stain to preserve its natural richness, but it can be customized with bold options to match your vision.

Finish

Because of its density and rich oils, Brazilian Redwood benefits from professional-grade finishes designed for adhesion and durability. We recommend:

  • Woca Oil – breathable, matte finish that allows natural movement and glow
  • Rubio Monocoat Oil – plant-based finish with rich depth and low maintenance
  • 100% Solid Urethane – crystal-clear, abrasion-resistant topcoat for long-term durability

FAQs - Brazilian Redwood (Massaranduba)

Frequently Asked Questions - Brazilian Redwood (Massaranduba)

Q: How hard is Brazilian Redwood compared to other hardwoods?
A: Brazilian Redwood (Patagonian Ash) has a Janka hardness rating of approximately 3,680 lbs—nearly three times as hard as Red Oak. It’s one of the most durable hardwoods available, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas, commercial spaces, and active households.
Q: Does Brazilian Redwood darken over time?
A: Yes. One of the defining traits of Brazilian Redwood is its color transformation. It begins as a golden-reddish hue and gradually deepens into a darker, richer red-brown as it’s exposed to light. This aging process adds character and depth to the floor and is considered a desirable natural evolution.
Q: Is Brazilian Redwood suitable for wide plank flooring?
A: Yes, particularly when engineered. While solid Brazilian Redwood is extremely stable for a hardwood of its density, engineered options offer even greater control over movement—making them ideal for wider planks, radiant heat systems, and glue-down installations.
Q: Does Brazilian Redwood take stain well?
A: Brazilian Redwood is typically finished clear to highlight its natural richness, but it can be toned or darkened with professional-grade finishes. Because of its dense grain and natural oils, stains and finishes should be applied using the proper preparation and technique.
Q: Is Brazilian Redwood flooring difficult to install?
A: Due to its density, Brazilian Redwood can be more challenging to mill, cut, or fasten compared to softer domestic species. However, with proper tools and experience, installation is straightforward. We provide guidance and recommendations to ensure smooth execution.
Q: Do you offer matching millwork in Brazilian Redwood?
A: Yes. We offer stair parts, flush vents, thresholds, and trim milled from Brazilian Redwood and finished alongside your flooring to ensure seamless color and grain consistency.
Q: Still Have Questions?
A: We’re here to help. Contact us for personalized recommendations, technical guidance, or to get started on a custom quote. We love what we do—and we think you’ll love the floor we create for you.
