Compare with Our Walnut Hardwood Flooring
Trying to decide between Cherry and Walnut? Both are luxurious hardwoods known for their elegance, but they offer distinct differences in tone, grain, and overall character.
Cherry starts as a light pinkish-red and matures into a deep, rich reddish-brown over time. Its fine, satiny grain and uniform appearance create a warm, welcoming feel—particularly in formal or transitional spaces. It’s especially valued for its graceful aging and soft glow under natural light.
Walnut, on the other hand, begins as a deep chocolate brown with occasional purples and grays, gradually lightening as it ages. Its bold grain and striking variation lend a sense of drama and distinction, making it ideal for statement floors and upscale interiors with contrast and depth.
Both are excellent hardwoods that offer long-term beauty and sophistication. Your choice may come down to whether you prefer warmth that deepens or richness that mellows with time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Cherry darken over time?
A: Yes. Cherry is well known for its natural aging process. It begins as a light pinkish tone and gradually deepens into a rich reddish-brown patina with exposure to light. This transformation is part of what makes Cherry so beloved, adding depth, warmth, and character to your floors over time.
Q: Is Cherry too soft for flooring?
A: Cherry is softer than Oak or Maple, with a Janka hardness of about 950 lbs. While it may dent more easily under heavy impact, it wears evenly and is perfectly suitable for residential use, especially in lower-traffic or formal areas. With proper finish and care, it will provide decades of beauty.
Q: Can Cherry be stained a different color?
A: Yes, Cherry can be stained, but many clients prefer its natural tone and aging process. If you’re looking for a custom color, our team can guide you through finish options that complement or alter Cherry’s base tone while maintaining clarity and grain visibility.
Q: Will sunlight affect the color of Cherry floors?
A: Absolutely—sunlight is a key factor in Cherry’s color transformation. If you’re installing in a space with large windows or direct sunlight, you can expect more rapid darkening early on. This is natural and part of Cherry’s appeal, but we recommend rotating rugs and furniture during the first year to allow for even coloration.
Q: Do you offer millwork to match Cherry flooring?
A: Yes. We offer stair parts, vents, thresholds, and custom trim milled from Cherry to match your flooring. All components are finished together for consistency in tone and appearance across your entire project.
Q: Is engineered Cherry flooring a good choice for my home?
A: Yes, especially in areas with radiant heat, concrete subfloors, or wider plank requirements. Our engineered Cherry floors offer excellent stability and the same aesthetic appeal as solid wood, with the added benefit of versatility in installation.
Q: Still Have Questions?
A: We’re here to help. Contact us for personalized guidance, detailed quotes, or to discuss whether Cherry is the right fit for your space. We love what we do—and we think you’ll love the floor we create for you.
