OUR ESSENTIAL FINISHING OPTIONS

When it comes to pre-finished hardwood flooring, Pennington Hardwoods offers two distinct finish types — each with its own advantages. Penetrating oil finishes absorb deep into the wood, fortifying it from within and highlighting its natural beauty. Urethane finishes, on the other hand, create a durable protective layer over the surface, adding resilience and resistance to wear. In essence, an oil finish allows you to walk directly on the enriched wood, while a urethane finish places a tough, transparent barrier between the wood and everyday life. We do offer other unique finish options, but for here let’s take a closer look at these essential finishing options to help you decide which finish best suits your space and lifestyle.

OIL FINISHED

Rooted in European tradition, penetrating oil finishes have been used for centuries and are increasingly favored in the U.S. for their natural, low-sheen aesthetic and ability to enhance the wood’s organic beauty. At Pennington Hardwoods, we offer UV-cured, commercial-grade versions of both Rubio Monocoat Oil and Woca Oil — trusted brands known for their high performance and visual appeal. Rubio provides a flat to matte sheen, while Woca ranges from matte to satin-matte.

While not as surface-durable as urethane, oil finishes offer a key advantage: They are repairable and easily renewed. Scratches can be sanded and repaired, and worn areas can simply be re-oiled to blend with the existing finish, without needing to refinish the entire floor. This makes them preferable for many for high-traffic residential and even commercial spaces, where the finish can be refreshed quickly — often overnight.

To keep these oil-finished floors looking their best, both Rubio and Woca recommend periodic cleaning with an oil-based soap, which both cleans and replenishes the wood’s natural oils — helping maintain its warmth, depth, and resilience over time. Many clients appreciate how oil-finished floors evolve with age, gaining richness and character that reflect the life lived on them. With proper care, they not only retain their beauty — many feel they grow even more beautiful with time.

URETHANE FINISHED

Urethane finishes have long been a popular choice in the U.S. — especially for those prioritizing durability and ease of maintenance. At Pennington Hardwoods, we use a high-clarity, premium urethane enhanced with aluminum oxide that avoids excessive build, to provide outstanding abrasion resistance while maintaining a beautifully natural appearance that allows the wood’s grain and depth to shine through.

These finishes are low-maintenance and easy to clean with routine sweeping and occasional damp mopping using a hardwood-approved cleaner such as Bona. However, with increased hardness comes a tradeoff in repairability. Deep scratches and dulling from heavy use or abuse can’t be easily spot-repaired like with oil — and typically require refinishing an entire area.

That said, for clients who want a low-maintenance, high-durability finish, our premium urethane can easily last for decades without needing a recoat — provided it’s properly maintained and protected from abrasive wear. Minor blemishes can be improved using a clear urethane touch-up pen and for those who tend to tread lightly and carefully on their floors, it’s a finish that can last a lifetime.

HOW TO CHOOSE

Both penetrating oil and urethane finishes offer distinct advantages, and either can be an excellent, long-lasting choice when properly maintained. The best finish for your project depends on several factors — including how the space will be used, the level of maintenance you’re comfortable with, and the aesthetic you prefer.

If you value renewability, warmth, and a soft, natural look, oil may be the right fit. If you prefer maximum durability and low maintenance, urethane could be the better option. Ultimately, your personal preference matters most — and we’re here to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your vision. Have questions? We’re always glad to help guide you toward the best solution for your space.
